The Fishers of Men National Tournament Trail crowned their new 2008-09 champions Saturday, March 28th as Mike Poston and Kevin Jones take home a new 2009 Triton TR-20X3! The North Carolina East team was a model of consistency as they weighed 17+ pound bags on all three days of competition. As most teams concentrated on stump fields and backwaters lined with lay downs, the champions keyed in on rocky areas in 5 foot of water or less and caught all their fish using Lucky Craft crankbaits and Chigger Craws. Fishing the same area all three days, the two anglers caught 53.24 pounds of fish and took home winnings valued at $48,160.00!

Coming in second overall with a three day total of 46.86 pounds and claiming the $10,000.00 prize were the Kansas Division teammates of Shane Wilson and Chuck Gardner. Using jigs and spinnerbaits in Pool 5, the pair weighed in 18.18 pounds on Day 1 and 17.51 pounds on Day 3. They mentioned on Day 2 they left their area immediately after catching a small 11 pound limit as they figured it was enough to qualify for the last day of competition. Shane and Chuck worked cuts on the east side of the river focusing on fish holding in the back ends towards the dike.

With a 12″ minimum for black bass, many teams were able to fill their limits with one or two smaller fish. However, there were plenty of solid fish brought to the scales including a massive 11.70 pound kicker on Day 1! What’s even more amazing is the team that caught the beast mentioned they lost another double digit fish the same day in the same area. Alongside the double digit monster, there were several other five and six pound fish that took home Big Bass awards for their anglers.

Congrats to all the teams that qualified to fish Nationals and a big congratulations to the new 2008-09 Fishers Of Men National Champions! The Red River is definitely an amazing fishery and we hope to fish it again in the near future!
