April 2010

14 teams fished, 7 teams weighed in and 2 places were paid.

After a tough tournament last week with less than 10 pounds taking first, this week’s Wed Nighter saw a couple of very nice bags brought to the scales. Water temps mid lake were around 62 degrees and with the full moon and another wave of fish back on beds, it was no surprise how the tournament would be won and exactly where it was won.

With only 14 teams we brought back the infamous shotgun start out of City Park. With this launch sequence it sure is nice to have a fast boat, and when it comes to speed Bullets are pretty hard to beat. Running away from the pack and heading up lake were the Waldrop brothers. Everyone knew where they were headed and the quality of fish in that area; whether or not they could get them to bite was the only question.

That question was answered at weigh-in as Mike and Jr. won for the third week in a row with a limit over 21 pounds! Their sack also included a 6.71 pound kicker that just barely missed winning Big Bass.

“It’s no secret where we’re fishing…we’ve been fishing that area for months now and have won the last three tournaments out of there. All our fish came from that area tonight, but the biggest fish from the last three weeks came from a different part of the lake,” said Jack Walrdop Jr.

As previously mentioned, the location is no secret but getting the fish to react has been the problem for most anglers. The brothers used a variety of baits to catch their fish and mentioned Senkos and swimbaits were the key. Jr. also shared they’ve had better success catching those fish once they are able to get them activated.

Jr. would like to thank his sponsors Fitovers Eyewear and The Angling Channel. They both would also like to thank Bee Caves BBQ; be sure to swing by their family restaurant next time you have a chance and talk fishing with Jack Jr. and Mike…they might just share a little more about their winning ways.

Fishing solo and coming in second with another solid limit was Brad Casebier. Brad is no stranger to fishing the spawn on Austin and many of you may recall last year when he and his partner weighed an incredible 27.36 pound stringer. To refresh your memory, check out this picture of their winning sack, which inlcuded the 10.36 pound Big Bass of the tournamant, from the May 20, 2009 Wed Nighter.

All those fish were caught bed fishing and came from a stretch of shoreline up north. His fish Wednesday night were also caught off beds but Brad had to run to different parts of the lake to find them. His bait of choice was a Yamamoto Senko fished both wacky and Texas rigged.

Although Brad’s 18.15 pound limit fell short of the Waldrops’ weight, he was able to edge them out of Big Bass with his 6.75 pound kicker. Brad would like to thank Radiant Plumbing. You can check out their services at radiantplumbing.com. If you ever need some work done, feel free to give Brad a call…you’ll be speaking directly with the owner!

The battle for third place and the Yamamoto and Kinami tackle pack was a close one and decided by less than a pound. In the end Ander Meine and Chuck Brooke’s 8.69 pounds was enough to get it done as they edged out the teams of Paul Carman/Dale Read and Brian Cotter/Kyle Judd.

Another week is in the books and it’s still a race to “the spot”. Sooner or later the majority of the spawn will be over and the playing field will be leveled. With all the grass coming back, the lake should set up nicely for some outstanding frog fishing this summer; can you say SWAMP DONKEY!!!
