Dove Hunting – Opening Day

Did a little homework this year and scouted their flight patterns for about a week.  I had a tremendous amount of mourning dove (200-400) range in the early a.m. and every day around 8 a.m., the white wings would fly right over the corner of the pasture on their way out of Taylor by the thousands.  Not all of the white wings were shootable but at least the farm was in their pattern.

A.M. Hunt -  I pretty much acted as a guide and just worked the dog (not easy to do on opening morning) for some of my nephews.  We stayed on the mourning dove until about 8:15 just because it is hard to leave them flying all around you but it only takes seeing hundreds of birds in groups flying low to change your mind.  Once we relocated to the white wing pasture it turned into WW III, birds everywhere ducking and diving, shot gun blast everywhere, it was freaking awesome.  I dont think the dog was all about it by the end (over worked and under paid), but all had their limits by 9.

P.M. Hunt- My dad, brother, buddy Jeff, nephew Cody, and myself headed back out to catch the white wings flying back into town around 4.  There was alot but not like the a.m. If any of us were marksman we could have been done in about 30 mins, but since we arent and its hard as hell to spot a dove while drinking a beer we didnt limit out on the white wings.  Knowing the amount of mourning dove in the lower pasture we refilled and relocated our beer buckets to the roosting tree and tanks where we knew they would be coming.  At 7pm all hell broke loose as they were coming in low and slow and only cared about getting in those trees.  So if you missed, no worries they would circle around and try again,  maybe they needed a Keystone from our buckets cause they had lead slung at em all day,  I dont know.  That being said, we all limited fairly easy and the dog still hasnt crawled out of bed.
