My son and I had the pleasure of meeting Wilkerson and his side kick ( Both LCRA Police) on Lake Bastrop Sunday. Yep, the checked us with a fine tooth comb. We had all the equipment we were suppose to but, our white throw cusion was soiled. It had been in my storage box and one side was discolored. "This is not acceptible", said the PoPo! It floated just fine, I showed them. "Not the point" says PoPo! They got down to the fire extiguisher and the needle was a hair in the red. OOPS! "That is a safty vialation that cannot be tolerated and we will have to ask you to leave the water" from the PoPo's Iron Fist!!! I then pulled the pin and showed them it still worked. (Isn't that the point?) They did actually write us ticket, not a warning, and we still had to leave. Not a happy boater was I! With no argument we left but I'm still mad. Whatever Wilkerson! Now, I could probable see if my buddies and I were drinking it up, it was late or whaterver. But, my son, who is four, and I with a Dr. Pepper in the middle of the day, had just got on the water. My son even ask them why we had to go so early. What a couple of D#@$%. So much for friendly waters on Bastrop! The bad part is that the fine money doesn't even go to TPWD.

Didnt know cushion had to be white? Sounds like they were out of $%!+ to do. Maybe his sidekick was in training and he was proving how bad a LCRA cop he was.

  • Vessels 16 feet and longer, excluding canoes and kayaks, are required to be equipped with one Type IV throwable PFD in addition to the Type I, II, III, or V PFD required for each person on board.
  • straight off the TPWD website. nothing about color

I went to Texas Parks and Wildlife and checked into this incident. It was made perfectly clear this was not a employee of their department who did this to the boater. You are correct that no special color is needed for the float cushion.

I've heard the same thing about old PFD vests.   If it's discolored it will be rejected.   Typically the discoloration means mildew, which might or might not mean waterlogged.   Note to self….store in a clean dry location
