OfflineWell I decided that I have had enough of Travis for a while so I headed out early this morning to try my luck on Belton. I haven't been up there in about a year and half so I had no idea what to expect except that it was probably going to be tough according to hear say.
My buddy Clint and I launched from Temple Lake Park at about 6:30 and headed to a main lake point upriver that I have had some success at in the past. The sun wasn't up yet and the water was slick so I decided a Sammy was in order. Good choice! Second cast a short fish blew up on it and missed. Third cast a fish that I would guess to be in the 2 pound range blew up on it right at the boat and gave me a heart attack. Fifth cast yields a huge explosion and a fish 3 pounds or better. 1 in the tank.
There were a lot of schoolies breaking behind us so we decided to move off the bank a little and investigate. After several cast with the Sammy it didn't seem like there were going to be any takers until what looked to be a 5 pounder or so tried to kill the bait right next to the boat. I ended up loosing the fish but it was very exciting none the less. Clint came up with one on a Zara Spook right after that.
I decided to try a jerk bait for a little bit. It was pretty much a fish every cast for the next 30 minutes or so but they were all in the 12.5 to 13.5 inch range. None the less they were slamming the pointer in 50 to 60 feet of water.
Once the schoolies moved on we returned to the point and slowed things down a little bit. I was quickly distracted by a reddish figure up on the slope at the back of the cove next to the point we were fishing. I looked at Clint and said "damn what a set of horns!" After a little closer look, there were three good bucks browsing along a semi cleared hillside. That interrupted our fishing for a little bit as I had to troll in for a closer look.
Returned to the point and caught another decent keeper on a C-rig and then decided to move on. The rest of the day turned out to be very hot and very slow. We bounced around on the lower end of the lake from BLORA all the way down to the dam with very little success. Just a couple of dinks here and there. When the mercury passed the triple digit mark we decided to call it quits and head for some air conditioning.
