A A AGot on the water Friday morning around 9 and immediately starting catching fish in shallow water on frogs and flukes. They were grouped up in two to five fish packs and sitting in pockets or in between patches of grass; key was finding the clear water in depths ranging from a 1-3 fow. We caught about eight keepers in an hour or so throwing Horny Toads and burning Flukes on top of the water, but they were all cookie cutter 2-2.5 pounders.
Ran to another hole in Opossum to check on the starting water Dale found last weekend and caught a couple more two pound fish on the frog. We didn't fish it too hard and spent more time fishing for a 7-8' gator. Shortly after 11 we ran to check on some deep holes by the dam, started graphing a ton of fish so threw a couple bouys out on some ledges. For the next hour we threw TX and C rigged plastics, spoons and deep diving cranks without a single nibble; I actually spent the last half hour watching Booker and Dale fish while I sat in the back of the boat soaking my feet in the water. On the way back in to Calliham we hit some grassy banks along the south shore and picked up another 2 pound keeper on the frog while missing several other blow ups. We put the boat on the trailer around 1:30 and head to the lodge for some much needed refreshments!
Fished the Invitational Saturday morning and decided to fish an area around our starting water and give the bait and fish a little bit of time to move back into the shallow pockets. Started off catching keepers right off the bat on TX rigged Senkos; we had a dozen keepers all between 2-2.5 pounds fishing a small point of trees with a couple more fish from 14-15". Most of those fish came from 2-3 fow and thumped the Senko once you pulled it out of the grass. When the sun finally came out and it was time to put on the Costas we headed for the really skinny water and started throwing frogs. Caught a few keepers but nothing bigger than 2.5 pounds. On the way out we hit up the same point of trees and stuck a three pounder to cull out a 2.5…all this before 8:30 am!
We were never able to cull another fish after that despite catching another four keepers and missing twice as many blow ups. Fishing is TOUGH on Choke right now but the better numbers of fish seem to be in extremely shallow water all throughout the day. Dale and I fished several well known big fish community holes and a lot of water from 8-20' without even a single sniff; had to go back to the really skinny water before we got bit again.
Ended up finishing fourth for the day just 2.56 ounces out of the money; Dale scored a Line-X gift certificate from Texas Boat World valued at $400 for our weight. On the way back to the lodge Dale and I started to think maybe we should have weighed some of those "cookie cutter" keepers to try and find a couple more ounces…but as tough as we knew the fishing has been we still thought it would take at least 10 pounds to get close to the money and 14 or so to win. Good times this weekend and already looking forward to going back next year!
