OfflineRolled into Zapata about 11 Thursday, drank a few and hit the water around 8:30. Put in at county and ran to the back of Pierce Cove and fished blades for the first hour and a half and boated 4 fish, 2-3 pounds. At 11ish, Made our way out to some of the gravel secondary points and started throwing squarebill cranks, various sizes, colors, brands, and started catching good numbers. Picked up about 10 fish in the 1-7 pound range fishing on one 100 yard stretch, biggest being a 7.2, also jumped off a solid 5-6 and lost another in that range at the boat. More on that frustration later. Around 1:30, decided we should try and fish some deeper water to target bigger fish and threw DD22s on points and steeper rock banks north of Pierce and pretty much struck out, caught 3 smallish fish and lost another solid fish in the 7 pound range at the boat, around 3pm and decided we needed to take a break. After some solid quesadillas at the Steakhouse, we hit the water again around 5. Decided we would head north and hit the points and ledges around the pump station with big jigs deep cranks until dark, and we struggled. Couldn't get bit on the football jig, we caught two 3 pounders in the evening session on DD22s and called it a night. 22lbs or so for the day, not exactly a fat Falcon bag.
Tried to launch from shore in the Tiger on Saturday and it was a no go, too muddy, too shallow. Rolled down to the state park and hit the water around 8:30, started working shallow rocky points with squarebills and picked up a couple 2-3 pound chunks, ran up to Bob's Nob area around 10:30 and started flipping trees in 8-10 FOW with 10 inch powerworms, brush hogs and mag flukes, only got bit twice, both on the 10 inch, one fish pushing 5 and another "tree shaker" dink that I could have sworn was going to be pushing it, those 1 pounders can feel really good in those mesquites. About 1 PM we headed back to our stretch near Pierce. Wind picked up shortly after we got there and our stretch was getting hammered by waves. Started cranking and instantly started catching. Doubled up with a pair of 4-5s, and had another jump off, boated 10 fish, about half were dinks but 5 chunks in the 2-4 pound range. Partner lost a good fish that bulldogged him and beelined straight for a mesquite. As Bendele would say, it was somewhere in the 3-12 pound range. Wind had gotten progressively worse throughout the day and we realized that we had a task ahead of us, so decided to head in around 4. That run back from Pierce to the state park is interesting in a 17ft Tracker with 25 mph sustained. Took us about 45 minutes, but we made it back in one piece, a little wet and with some sore balls. Finished the day with 20lbs or so.
After a few cocktails Saturday night, forgot to set an alarm and hit the water Sunday at 9:30. Ran straight to our stretch at Pierce, boated 5 fish for about 15 lbs, decided to leave it at 11:30, ran up the river to flip trees with jigs and worms, trying to take one last swing at a big one and boated one 2 pound fish on the 10 inch powerworm. Off the water at two.
Didn't get a giant, my third trip to Falcon and each one gets slightly better. Would love to fish it sometime with someone who knows what they are doing out there. Think we are doing the right things, just the wrong places…funny how that works. One thing I learned is to never throw a crankbait on braid. This was my first time and I know I would not have lost fish like I did with mono, which I normally throw for all cranks. I feel I was just ripping the bait out of their mouths.
