Thursday

Well finally got to make the much anticipated trip to Falcon.  I was rolling solo with my boat and with Dustin and Chris were in Dustin's.   Looking at the weather and hearing reports really though we were going to hit the lake for prime time.  Got to the lake around 3 on Thursday and put in at the public ramp in Zapata.  Made a very short run to a spot I have done well on before and that still has a ton of water on it.  Made a few passes with one bite and no fish.  Then bounced around for about an hour and half and caught a 2 lber out of a tree on a Mega Claw.   Then decided to head back to my first spot as it really has produced for me in the past.   Was throwing an H2O 10-14' diver in the sexy citrus pattern and immediately hooked up with a 2lber, followed by a 5lber. then another 2lber.   At that point I called the guys and told them it was happening and for them to get over here.  They did and were about 100 yards away when I get a hit and haul water only to inspect my bait to find a scale the size of a dime and get a bit excited.  (Anyone have any idea how big a fish has to be to have a scale the size of a dime?)  Anyway about 5 casts later the rod loads up and a few min later I have a 9lb 3ozer in the boat, pretty excited at this point.  Its getting dark so I head over to them and get some pics with a few more casts to follow before we head in.    On another note while we were at the Dam we could hear what sounded like a war zone with hundreds of rounds being fired over in Mexico.

Friday

We decide to head down and put in by the Dam at the State Park.  We make a short run (about 10min) to a cove and are discussing how we were going to approach it when we notice that Dustin's motor is smoking, off with the cowling and we have FIRE!  He goes through is extinguisher and still has fire, good thing we hung together this morning.  He uses mine to get the fire out.   I tow them in and put the Ranger on the trailer, load their gear into my boat and away we go.  Now the wind is blowing about 20 so it makes for some fun fishing.  Dustin catches one 2lber on a crank.  This is the only fish caught until we head toward the Dam around 4. We get there and spend some time looking around as there are several boats in the area.  Finally we get an opportunity to hit a long stretch of water along the rip rap, and start hitting them pretty good on cranks,  I stick a 4.15, and on the next cast get a 6.3. this went on for about an hour then stopped cold turkey.  I picked up a fluke and had 3 fish in about 10 casts.  And from then on until dark it was a blast.   We caught well over 40 fish in the last hour and half of light having several doubles and almost a triple.   After loading up and leaving the park we are not able to make the standard 30 mile run back to Zapata as there is a multiple fatality wreck and we are re-rounted on a 80 mile trip back to Oso.   Finally get back and fix something to eat and drink and then bed.

Saturday

Completely sucked, we had 2 bites and no fish, and we fished hard!  Front came through and the temp stayed under 70 all day with the wind howling.

Sunday

Hit the water early throwing cranks and jigs with nothing until about 11.  Chris lost a 4lber on a crank.  I stuck  2lber out of a tree on a rattlesnake and then a few min later set the hook on a decent fish to have knot failure.  I head to re-tie and both Dustin and Chris see my fish clear water both saying the fish was easily 6lbs great.   Dustin then gets a few fish on the rattlesnake out of the trees, and it is time to go.

This was definitely not the trip we expected to have, and I find it funny that the last two times I have been to Falcon Lake Austin has kicked out a couple Share Lunkers.

The water temp all over the lake ranged form 60 to 62.  The clarity was horrible up as they are pushing water from Amistad with only inches of visablility while down at the Dam looked like two foot.   This trip did not satisfy me so I hope I can get another one in soon.

Probably not what you expected Big James but a 9.3 is nothing to complain about.  I still wish I was there no matter what the fishing is like.  Nothing like hanging out, drinking, bbq, and being on that beast of a lake.

Nice fish James. Wish I could have made trip. One of the days I'm gonna get down there.
