Water temps are still in the mid 70's at Lake Amistad.  Bass continue to be scattered in all parts of the water column they are still eating fairly good.  All types of presentations and tactics are working and I am hopeful of a cool down soon and the bait to start a serious migration into the creeks.  The big fish will then get into a serious feeding mood.  The lake's water level came up slightly since this past weekend rain storm and approx. 1110 ft above sea level.

Current Patterns -  

Shallow:  The frog bite in the morning is good some days and not so good others.  If you stay around the shallow pondweed for the first 3-4 hours of the day you can get 10-15 good bites. Some days the El Grande Lures Sapo and Optimum Furbit frogs are very productive, but other days you need to fish the outside of the grass lines with topwater popping baits like a Pop-R or walking baits like the Paycheck baits Repo-Man.  Working plastics like El Grande lures Hatch-Match sticks, Boom R Ang or 4 inch Optimum swimbaits slowly on the outside edges of the pondweed has also been productive.

Mid-Depth:  A sure fire way to catch some staging fish waiting to go on the fall feeding binge is working hydrilla in the 10-20 foot zone.  I have been working plastics very slowing and that seems to be the key for bigger fish and more consistent action.  Carolina Rigs seem to be the most effective presentation.  Quality fish are also being caught in this depth zone ‘punching’ grass on the outside of thick matted hydrilla beds.

Deep:  The deep bite seems to be fading some as bait fish schools are breaking up.  Large concentrations of deep fish are hard to find right now on the lake.

Fishing Forecast Tip:  The breaking up of deep bait pods should result in schooling surface activity.  This should take place by the end of the month.  Look for fish activity on the water’s surface over deep creek channels leading into major drains.
