Hey Guys…
The ATX Bassmasters are planning on throwing together a Big Bass tournament on Lake Austin around mid-March.  It won't be an hourly deal, but a final weigh-in at the end of the day.  The only thing we're trying to decide is how to do the entry fees.  So here's the question… which would you prefer?: A) Entry fees on an individual basis of say $50 per contestant… non-boaters are welcome to fish as well… or B) A team tournament with an entry fee of say $75 per team?  I know Big Sandy does the $50 per contestant thing in their big bass tournament, but I also know team tournaments are popular.  Let us know guys!  Thanks…

If only one weigh-in at the end of the day how many overall places are you planning on paying?  How many fish can an angler weigh?

I think most Big Bass tournaments are fished as a "team" even though they are not officially team tournaments.  Also, if only having one weigh-in at the end of the day it should definitely be an individual event so at least two fish may be weighed per boat (assuming two anglers in a boat).

Unless your payouts are substantial I think the one weigh-in at the end of the day might actually hurt your participation.  Most people fish Big Bass events because the hourly format gives them something fresh to look forward to throughout the tournament; IE several chances at winning instead of just one.

Andy…

Payout all depends on participation.  If you want I can send you a copy of the payout scale Temple put together and see what you think.  You've got a lot more experience with this tournament directing thing than we do I'm sure.  :-)  We have decided to keep it simple and just have the one weigh-in as opposed to hourly because this is just kind of a last minute thing that we are throwing together.  With an hourly pay-out, I imagine you need to be able to guarantee what those hourly pay-outs will be, and we're not in a position to do that right now.  We're not expecting a HUGE turn-out with this, but we are trying to get as good of a turn out as we can for how quickly we are trying to put this together.  So far on ABF it sounds like guys would prefer the team format.  Although, you definitely bring up a point with being able to weigh-in more than one fish.  If we only allowed one fish to weigh-in per team, I can imagine the dilemma of catching two 6lbers and trying to figure out which to cull.  We will probably allow for two fish to be weighed-in under such circumstances.

Throwing a one boat one fisherman tournament may be a good ideal for those who want to try it.

I'm game.
