After a long stretch of cold and windy weather, 219 teams were greeted with warming temperatures for the Bass Champs season opener on Lake Travis. With a week of sunshine and temperatures in the high 70s, the majority of the winners reported shallow water and moving baits being key factors on Saturday.
Travis winners Allen Shelton and Heath Moody reported an extremely shallow bite on the south end of the lake. They threw Chatterbaits and jigs in a foot of water to catch their winning sack. Shelton and Moody weighed in 20.70 pounds and bested 218 other teams to win $20,000.00 for first place, they also qulaified for the $5,000.00 Skeeter and $200.00 Sure-Life bonuses. Third place father and son team of Greg Westall Sr and Jr also found shallow water success and caught the majority of their fish throwing crankbaits in 6 feet of water. The two fished mid lake and reported all their fish coming from areas with stumps.
Rounding out the teams in the money were TTZ fishing team members Brian Booker, Robby Crabb and Bryan Thompson. Brian and Robby finished 21st with three fish weighing 12.62 pounds, anchored by a solid 5.68 lb bass. They found their fish primarily in one area above Tournament Point and caught them in deeper water on hand-tied finesse cut jigs and a chartreuse/blue Norman DD14 crankbait.
Bryan Thompson and his partner, Grant Schrabel, weighed in a limit of 12.42 pounds to cut a 24th place check. Bryan found active fish chasing moving baits while he was out prefishing the week before. When the pair returned to their spot the morning of the tournament, those fish were still there and ready to eat. The team targeted shallow points up the river and caught all their fish on a Strike King Red Eye Shad in the Sexy Shad color. Bryan also mentioned they could only get bit throwing the bait into extremely shallow water and dragging it off a small ledge in 2-4 feet of water.
