13 teams fished, 6 teams weighed in and 2 places were paid.
Thirteen die hard teams ignored the forecasted ninety percent chance of thunderstorms and 40 degree temperatures and showed up to the TTZ Wednesday Night season opener on Lake Austin! With reports of huge spawning fish on beds and monster sacks coming out of the lake, the 26 anglers braved the unfavorable conditions hoping to break Dale Read’s 2008 season record of 28.04 pounds and win the $300.00 bonus sponsored by Lee Evans of Certified Arbor Care.
Many of the teams reported sporadic bites throughout the evening but the scales were greeted with a couple of solid 4-6 pound fish right off the bat. Weighing in the first limit was the always consistent team of Jack (Jr) and Mike Waldrop, their weight of 12.39 pounds was enough to hold them in first place for the majority of the weigh in. However, once Dale and Jake came around the corner and the crowd caught the first glimpse of their bag, there was only one thing on everyone’s minds; could the father and son team break their own record?
When Dale pulled out their biggest fish and weighed it for Big Bass, the scales lit up at 9.88 pounds. After four more fish entered the basket, there was a brief moment of silence before the scales settled on 30.18 pounds! Let’s take a moment to think about that, over THIRTY pounds of bass in 3.5 hours of fishing…that is plain SICK! Dale reported catching the record breaking sack in one area throwing wacky rigged Yamamoto Senkos. Speaking of Senkos, the Yamamoto and Kinami tackle pack went to Eric and Andy for their finish just out of the money. The team graciously deferred their prize to the fourth place team of Brent and Chris.
One of the highlights of the evening was seeing Jake’s reaction to their record breaking sack; as everyone gathered around the scale, I had my eyes on the usually stoic youngster off to the side. Once the official weight was announced, a victorious fist pump followed by a whispered “YES!” was a perfect way to end the evening.
Congrats again to Dale and Jake on their record breaking sack and the Waldrops for their second place finish. As previously mentioned, Dale and Jake will also receive a bonus of $300.00 for breaking the 2008 season record of 28.04 pounds! We’ll be on Austin again next Wednesday, hopefully the weather will cooperate and anglers will get a chance to demo the 2009 Legend Alpha 211 from Marine Outlet.
