27 teams fished, 9 teams weighed in and 3 places were paid.
We had 27 boats last night and 52 anglers fishing for 3.5 hours, when it was all said and done a limit going 8.56 pounds took down first place and a 3.34 pound fish won Big Bass.
A small limit goes a very long way right now on Austin, TTZ fishing team member Dale Read and Eric Austin employed a power fishing strategy and ran to several different holes to find their five keeper bites. All of their fish, including the last keeper boated at 9:53 pm, came on a wacky or Texas rigged Yamamoto Senko fished around grass and ditches. They weighed in the only limit and took home over $400.00 for first place. Power fishing with a weightless wacky rigged Senko may be an oxymoron, but it definitely paid off last night and contributed to Dale’s seventh Wednesday night win on Lake Austin this season.
Coming in second just .3 pounds shy were Bryan Thompson and Grant Schnabel. The team threw small jerkbaits and shallow running cranks along a 150 yard stretch of grass on the lower end to catch their 8.26 pounds. If luck would have gone their way, their four fish sack would have been a solid limit anchored by a 6 to 7 pound fish that Bryan lost on the second cast of the tournament! Thompson later stated he is considering giving up fishing on Lake Austin to spend more time on something he actually enjoys and is good at…like crochet and beer pong.
Bobby Frey and his partner Travis took third with 5.02 pounds. The Texas Bass Team member and his partner caught their fish on a buzzbait and jig. Big Bass of the evening went to Shane and Barrett for their 3.34 pound fish, Barrett used a plastic craw to catch their only keeper fish of the evening.
Despite the small bags weighed in and the under average sized fish brought to the scales, we did witness a Lake Austin brute last night when Randy and Gene found a fish in the 8 pound range floating around City Park. They brought it back to the weigh in and tried to revive it for nearly half an hour. Unfortunately, there was a growth the size of a golf ball inside the fish’s mouth that no amount of care could mend.
With dove season and Daylight Savings just around the corner there are only a few Wed Nighters remaining this year. As tough as the lake is fishing all it takes is one lucky bite to get you in the money. Thanks to everyone that came out and see y’all next week!
