13 teams fished, 7 teams weighed in and 2 places were paid.
The mayfly hatch was out of control this evening; from the large groups hovering around the trees and docks to the thousands floating on the water, everywhere you went they were there.
With the newly abundant food source on top of the water, the smaller fish moved in shallow to feed and the bigger ones were not too far behind. The teams that adapted and presented a bait in the upper water column were the ones that walked away with the money. Hub Bechtel and his partner Jason took first place with a bag just under 10 pounds. They caught all of their fish on a Lucky Craft Sammy and concentrated on small humps in the mouths of creeks and ditches to bring in the only limit of the evening.
Coming in second were TTZ fishing team member Robby Crabb and Brandon Houston with three fish for 7.35 pounds. Robby caught the team’s biggest fish and their second keeper on a SPRO frog just before the sun went down. He had to skip the frog beneath docks with surrounding grass to get bit and also mentioned losing several fish that took the bait under but never got hooked up. Brandon caught their third keeper on a fluke and lost another solid fish that would have helped them reach their limit.
The giants are still hard to come by but the bite seems to be picking up, we followed up last week’s numerous four and five pounders with a pair of fours weighed in tonight. Bryce and Carson’s single 4.19 pounder edged out Lee and Josh’s 4.08 pound kicker and awarded them Big Bass of the tournament. Bryce caught the fish on a Texas rigged Grande Bass Rattlesnake.
We’ve decided to run the Wednesday Nighter all the way through September and have just three events remaining for the ’09 season, thanks to all that showed and see y’all next week!
