12 teams fished, 5 teams weighed in and 2 places were paid.
Some things never change on Travis…the wind continues to blow, the fishing gets tough after the lake fills up and Charles Whited wins another tournament. The May 11 Tuesday Night Tournament was no different, we were greeted with 25 mph winds and it only took 5.84 pounds to finish in the money with Whited taking home the lion’s share.
Charles follows up his Travis Bass Champs win on May 8, where he and partner Bill Polkinghorn weighed in 17.12 pounds and took home $26,400, with another win at the TTZ Tues Nighter. Charles Whited and Chris Jaynes lapped the rest of the field with four fish weighing 12.14 pounds and took home $215 for their efforts.
The winners fished the same pattern Charles had success with during Bass Champs and targeted suspended fish in boat slips. Although their fish were caught on a variety of baits including jerkbaits, swimbaits and plastic worms, every fish was caught on a Power Tackle rod. Known for their incredible strength to weight ratio, the rods have a cult-like following in south Texas and are quickly becoming a favorite among tournament anglers throughout the state.
“We were sitting in about 70 feet and pitching the swimbaits up into the slips; the fish were suspended so a slower retreive worked best,” said Charles.
Charles is a Power Tackle regional Pro Staff member and Chris is one of the owners of the company…it must be the rods!
Coming in second place and taking home $145 were Lee Evans and Greg Mehaffey. They also targeted deeper water and caught all their fish off deeper banks on Flukes and Senkos. The team actually weighed in 6.84 pounds but were deducted a pound after a fish care penalty.
If you recall, Lee Evans owns Certified Arbor Care and sponsored the Big Bass and Big Stringer awards for last season’s Austin Wed Night Tournament. Dale and Jake Read collected an additional $300 bonus from Certified Arbor Care for their Big Stringer of 30.18 pounds. Local sponsors are what make our weeknight tournaments possible; if you ever need an arborist, please visit his site at certifiedarbor.com.
Winning the Fish Finders tackle pack of Pro’s Choice Lures were Brian Booker and Andy Nuyen. Their two fish bag was anchored by a solid four pounder; both fish were caught in the back of a creek on wacky rigged Senkos.
The River City Grille Big Bass Rollover is up to $380. With summer just around the corner and the fish beginning to settle into deeper water and under docks, the fishing on Travis will pick up and we should see bigger sacks coming to the scales. Thanks again to everyone that came out and see y’all next week!
