TTZ – Travis Tues Night 7/20/10

12 teams fished, 3 teams weighed in and 2 places were paid.

A dozen teams showed up to try and take down the River City Grille Big Bass Rollover at the Tuesday night Travis event this week, but not all made it to the scales. With only three boats weighing fish, and only a seven plus pound bag to win, it appears the trend of tough Travis fishing continues. To make it tougher still, the water continues to fall; in fact over three feet in the last week!

Taking home 1st for the third week in a row was the duo of Brian Booker and Grant Schnabel. Though they haven’t been bringing big bags to the scales, they have been consistent. A four fish bag for 7.82 pounds was enough to lap the field and earn them another $215 for spray tanning. Brian told us more.

“We really didn’t do anything different, but the cable bite was better this week. In fact we had three of our four keepers there in the first ten minutes of the tournament. But the bite there died altogether after that. Still getting them on Senkos in about 30 to 40 foot. Then we headed to the marina ledge.”

This ledge has been an interesting place for the team the last few weeks, and this week it didn’t disappoint for drama as Grant explained at the weigh-in.

“When we got over to the ledge we were feeling pretty good…it was still pretty early in the day. I was able to snag a keeper on a Senko on a shallow wall on the way in. After that, Brian hooked an easy 3 ½ pounder, but it came to the surface and shook its head and threw the hook near the boat. A little bit later I had a really good fish load up just off the ledge; it made a few big head shakes then broke me off on the sharp ledge rock. It was a real big one we think. We were pretty depressed, but it turned out we were in better shape than we thought. Maybe those fish will cooperate for us next week!”

Congratulations guys…it will be interesting to see if they can sweep the week of July. That will be a tall order, especially with the caliber of anglers we’re seeing at these Travis Tues Nighters!

Second went to the team of Mike Abernathy and Luke Larson. They were the picture of efficiency, as they needed just one fish at 3.04 pounds to secure a cool $145! Mike chuckled as he was advised of his good fortune.

“Shoot we worked hard for that fish…we just brought it to the scales ‘cause we were happy to have something in the bag as tough as it was! We caught it on a secondary point at about 8:15 this evening; it bit a watermelon centipede Carolina rigged in about 15 feet of water.”

Congratulations Mike and Luke, and just goes to show on Travis you NEVER know what it’ll take to get paid!

We are down to the wire on the eight pounder and it’s looking more and more like a Saturday stringer tourney for some big cash will be the case at the end of August, but there are five more opportunities before our last scheduled event on August 24th. If you haven’t fished a Tuesday Nighter yet, you must fish one Tuesday tourney in 2010 to qualify for the Saturday tournament on the 28th of August. Again, we will only have this event if the big bass rollover is not claimed.

We will probably be looking at a Saturday event starting at close to $1,200 in the pot if we continue getting the same amount of boats out; it’s shaping up to be a great payday for a $40 entry! The River City Grille Big Bass Rollover starts at $995 next Tuesday…see you at the ramp!
