Bass Champs Southern division found itself fishing Choke Canyon March 21st. As everyone knew the lake has been absolutely on fire lately. Choke continued to prove itself as the hottest bass fishing lake in the world right now, shattering long standing records for Bass Champs.
Imagine if you can catching a 13.20 pound fish, and not winning Big Bass, then imagine catching a 15.20 pound fish, and still not winning big bass! That’s what happened to two anglers as they looked on in amazement as Derick Kurkendall lifted a 15.56 lb bass to take 1st overall with 38.82 lbs, and 1st for Big Bass with the 15 pound monster! However, these top three fish still broke Bass Champs records for the top three largest fish ever weighed in, not to mention in one tournament!
Each of these fish would have qualified for the Texas Parks and Wildlife ShareLunker program, but unfortunately did not survive much past weigh in. Hopefully, tournament directors will be able to come up with a creative solution that balances conservation and competition so these fish of a lifetime can be kept healthy, and survive to go back into the lake and continue to grow.
Texas Tournament Zone is working closely with TPWD to help create material that will allow the angler greater information on how to properly care for these giant bass.
